As part of its strategy against climate change, the Iberdrola Group operates renewable energy projects around the world, with an increasing focus on new markets such as Australia. The production of green energy in the Oceania country continues to increase and is expected to accelerate its growth over the next 10 years.
Our activity in the country began in 2020, when we successfully completed a friendly takeover bid for 100% of the Australian renewable energy company Infigen Energy, now Iberdrola Australia.
Thanks to this transaction, the Group has become one of the leaders in the Australian market, currently with more than 2,500 MW of installed renewable capacity. In Australia, we also have a project portfolio of more than 2 GW in various technologies, at different stages of development and located in the states of New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia..

Port Augusta project.
Among the most emblematic installations is Port Augusta, our first hybrid wind-solar plant in the world. Located in the state of South Australia, the plant combines a 210 MW wind farm and a 107 MW photovoltaic plant.
This portfolio has recently been expanded with the addition of the Ararat Wind Farm (242 MW), Iberdrola’s largest asset in Australia and its first owned generation facility in the state of Victoria.
Our renewable energy assets are currently among the largest in Australia. In addition to our own assets, we also contract in-country production from other renewable operators, enabling us to serve a wide range of customers. This is the case of the acquisition of the rights to the world's largest wind farm at Mount James, with 1,000 MW, and the 360 MW Broadsound photovoltaic plant.
Iberdrola combines its own renewable generation with long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), enabling it to provide reliable supply and stable, predictable energy solutions to its customers.
Among the projects currently under development in the country, Broadsound stands out. Together with its battery (180 MW) in Queensland, it will begin commercial operations in 2026. In addition, in 2025 the installation and commissioning of the Smithfield battery (65 MW) in New South Wales has been completed.
On the other hand, Iberdrola continues to make progress with the development of Aurora Green, the company’s first offshore wind farm in Australia, located in the Victoria region, with an estimated capacity of 3 GW. This project, which received a feasibility license in 2024, will represent a key step in the expansion of offshore wind energy in the region.

Commitment to the Australian market
Iberdrola has committed to investing €1 billion in Australia by 2028, with the aim of accelerating the transition to renewables in the country and reaching 4,000 MW in the coming years. Iberdrola has already invested €2 billion in this strategic market.
To continue to lead the renewable energy transition and put customers in the driver's seat, in 2021 we also acquired Autonomous Energy, a leading Australian engineering and construction company offering a wide range of green energy solutions. With this acquisition, Australian customers will have access to integrated and optimised green energy solutions that will reduce their energy costs and emissions.
